The Cruise Lady: Ship Happens!

Ship Happens!

Carnival Port of Call

One of my pet peeves is passengers blaming cruise lines for “blips.” Cruise lines are NOT responsible for weather, seasonal fog banks, “motion on the ocean” – or missed ports of call.

To say you’ll never sail a certain line again because of an event over which they had no control, is like saying you’ll never go to the Renaissance Fair again because it rained! STUFF HAPPENS!

I have survived lots of “blips,” and will survive more! I have missed several ports of call in our travels, due rough seas or fog (a couple of times due to State Department Travel Advisories –but that’s another blog.) Once, when the ocean motion was too great for tendering into port at Grand Cayman the Captain opened the bars for 2 hours of complimentary service (after that, no one really cared about having missed the Turtle Farm – LOL!) I once spent an entire afternoon and evening onboard the Voyager – dining – wining – enjoying showroom entertainment, while all the while moored to the dock due to Galveston’s seasonal fog! The only problem I saw, was that they could not open the Casino! Sometime during the wee morning hours the ship sailed and normalcy returned.

Carnival Port of Call

The point I’m trying to get across is that with ALL cruise lines, it’s “SAFETY FIRST” – YOURS and THEIRS! On the open seas, the Captain is in control – upon entering or departing a port, the port’s PILOT is in charge. Neither is going to risk life nor limb of thousands of passengers and crew (not to mention a multi-million dollar vessel) just so you can see a Turtle Farm.

Cruising – like life, is full of “blips.” So if you’re gonna’ cruise – learn to live with ‘em! Don’t blame the Renaissance Fair because it rained!
